At greater distances, directional selection is relatively weak, ensuring that the population is not rapidly overrepresented by a few highly fit individuals. As the population mean nears the fitness optimum, stabilizing selection takes over, and fitness drops off more rapidly as individual phenotypes are further from the optimum.
